Best In Show (2013)

Best in Show (2013) by Laura Dee Milnes

On Saturday 15 June 2013 at LUPAFETE, the last ever Lock Up Performance Art, curated by Jordan Mckenzie, Kate Mahony and Rachel Dowle, Laura Dee Milnes curated and hosted a small but perfectly formed open exhibition of baked works of art. As part of performance/installation BEST IN SHOW Laura collated and curated a collection of baked goods in the name of art, community and summer fêtes. She also awarded one deserving dessert (a recreation of Damien Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, in swiss roll and lime jelly) the title of ‘Best In Show’. All submissions were welcome – big, small, savoury, sweet – and all were given equal billing. There were no guidelines for submissions.

Prior to the cake stall’s grand opening, Laura, in disguise as alter-ego June, performed An impossible act, a durational and eventually, participatory performance in which she attempted to single handedly erect a gazebo in the rain.
